House Committee Approves Child Protection, Human Trafficking Bills

On May 18, the House Judiciary Committee passed, by voice vote, H.R. 1973, the Protecting Young Victims from Sexual Abuse Act, as amended, and H.R. 2473, the Enforcing Justice for Victims of Trafficking Act, as amended.

Protecting Young Victims from Sexual Abuse Act

The bill, sponsored by Reps. Susan Brooks (R-IN) and Lois Frankel (D-FL), co-chairs of the Congressional Caucus for Women’s Issues, would require prompt reporting of sexual abuse at facilities under the jurisdiction of amateur sports organizations recognized by the U.S. Olympic Committee.

The Senate Judiciary Committee approved its version of the bill, S. 534, on May 11 (see The Source, 5/12/17).

Ensuring Justice for Victims of Trafficking Act

Sponsored by Rep. Ann Wagner (R-MO), H.R. 2473 would provide training and technical assistance to federal, state, local, and tribal jurisdictions for the investigation, prosecution, and prevention of human trafficking. Among other provisions, the bill also would support state services for victims of trafficking and encourage states to adopt protections for victims.
