House Passes Military Sexual Assault Bill

On July 27, the House passed, by voice vote, the Ruth Moore Act (H.R. 1607). The House Veterans Affairs Committee approved the bill on May 21 (see The Source, 5/22/15).

The legislation, sponsored by Rep. Chellie Pingree (D-ME), would direct the secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs to cover mental health claims that result from military sexual trauma (MST) that occurred during active duty.

Among other provisions, the measure would include as a “covered mental health condition” post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, depression, or any other mental health diagnosis that the secretary determines to be related to MST.
