Immigration Bill Hangs in Limbo

After two weeks of debate, Senate Democrats blocked action on a bill (S. 2454) to enhance border security and reform U.S. immigration laws. On April 7, a GOP leadership effort to invoke cloture on the motion to proceed to consideration of S. 2454 failed, 36-62, 24 votes short of the 60 necessary to limit debate. The Senate began its debate on the measure last week (see The Source, 3/31/06).
