Senate Honors 40th Anniversary of Women at Coast Guard Academy

On September 29, the Senate passed, by unanimous consent, S. Res. 579, a resolution recognizing the 40th Anniversary of the first class of women admitted to the Coast Guard Academy.

Sponsored by Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), the legislation notes that the Coast Guard was the first military service academy to issue appointments to women and that 38 women enrolled in the academy in June 1976. The Coast Guard Academy Class of 2020 has a higher enrollment rate of women (38 percent) than any other military service academy.

Among other provisions, the measure “commends the Coast Guard Academy for breaking barriers and creating equal opportunities for women in the Armed Forces.”
