Senate Sends Coast Guard Bill, Sexual Assault Provisions to the President

On September 22, the Senate approved, by unanimous consent, H.R. 2838, the Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation Act, after adopting a substitute amendment, also by unanimous consent. The House approved the bill on November 15, 2011 (see The Source, 11/18/11); the Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee approved a virtually identical version of the bill (S. 1665) in November 2011 (see The Source, 11/4/11).

The measure, sponsored by Rep. Frank LoBiondo (R-NJ), would authorize $25.8 billion for FY2012 through FY2014 for Coast Guard operations and personnel. The measure would address sexual harassment and sexual violence at the Coast Guard Academy, among other provisions.

Details of the Senate amendment are not yet available.
