Women’s Participation in Peace Negotiations Addressed by House Committee

On March 22, the House Foreign Affairs Committee held a hearing, “Women Fighting for Peace: Lessons for Today’s Conflicts.” The hearing focused on the effect of women’s participation in peace negotiations and other efforts to reduce violence and extremism.

The following witnesses testified:

• Her Excellency Monica McWilliams, professor, Women’s Studies, Transitional Justice Institute, Ulster University;
• Hassan Abbas, PhD, professor and chair, Regional and Analytical Studies Department, National Defense University; and
• Jacqueline O’Neill, director, Institute for Inclusive Security.

Her Excellency Betty Bigombe, senior director, Fragility, Conflict, and Violence, World Bank, was scheduled to testify, but was unable to participate due to outside circumstances.
